Monthly New Moon Intention – New, Full and Dark Moon Lunar, Dreaming and Emotional Work-study for Soul Guidance

new moonBy Phoenix of Elder Mountain – We have been getting a lot of new participators on our monthly lunar practice each month and once in awhile for the newer people, I send out a basic outline of the “Lunar Practice and Disciplines” and how and why its done. The benefits and struggles of our self awareness path can be difficult and very difficult at times, and this continual new moon intention and full moon release practice, helps us emotionally become ‘aware’ of our issues with a steady guide by the moon herself.

Basic Monthly Practice: The New Moon Intention (chose only “one”) is ONLY ABOUT YOU, not anyone else, because self-awareness comes from within through you into your conscious self. After you set the one intention, you will see what arises your original intention and it will be the “opposite”. Example: I am peaceful. For the following two weeks, you will begin to become aware of what upsets you, what triggers your emotions, or what bothers you. Each time you set a new moon intention, this is the what happens. When years go by, you can work on the same issues, and each will be revealed in different ways, depending on the energy of that particular moon cycle.

When the Full Moon comes in two weeks (after the new moon), then you set ONE RELEASE INTENTION on the day of the full moon, to let go and release something within, which was based on what surfaced with the new moon intention. It takes a while to get the practice.

Goals are our relationship to the outer world, Intentions are our relationship to our inner world, and that is the main difference. When this practice is walked along side your other healing work or spiritual practices, it reveals the hidden self to us. Buddhism calms and breaks the mental body down, out of its out of its harsh grip or control of a well worn and grooved path, by making us aware of the minds busy sides of static, noise and constant thoughts.

This practice is only about your emotional well being, and how this effects our soul that is untouchable. Its not about anyone else, except the mirrors of those who come onto our path each month as a reflection of our own shadow or our past life karma. This practice helps you to become ‘aware of your projections onto others’, your emotional resistance (fears or self sabotage), intuitive blocks and the responding mirrors (other people) and how that effect our emotional balance and imbalances each moon cycle.

Our emotional energy and soul energy are just… energy bodies, one feels and one does not. The soul is an untouchable and unrecognizable (astral body) even for those who astral travel (because lucid dreaming and astral travel are confined to the mental astral body). How we awaken to the multi levels self is how aware we are willing to become and that is not always pretty or nice when we recognize our own shadow or behaviors. Otherwise, every alcoholic or pot addict would stop drinking or smoking at will.

Not happening without great struggle, because the addiction has overcome the awareness body of the inner soul self and she is left weak and abandoned. Love addiction relationships are the same, anything where we are bound by habit and unawareness. We are unconscious more than we can possible imagine until we begin a dedicated journey of any kind, but this kind of practice is “emotional intelligence” and the loosening of the “subtle body” called the soul.

This practice is a very simple practice in application, that is slow, mundane, and steady each moon cycle, to reveal our emotional struggles and issues to us (creating self awareness of the intuitive body), yet reveals our very complex nature the longer we do it.

I am in my 23rd year of practicing every single moon cycle with one intention and with one full moon release. The awareness of self to self enlightenment was beyond what I ever could have comprehended in my first ten years of doing this practice. I have walked and teach it as a “living” teaching, a living experience, not a knowledge study reality.

I created this as a life path and did years of testing on myself and spent about eight to ten years doing it in my new moon circles that I taught, which were based on emotional awareness and soul awareness practices. Then I added and blended it into my “moon-goddess” circles to understand the ‘higher self’ of the feminine teachings of the emotional and soul body when it came to “inter-personal” relationships; and lastly, I added “goddess, moon with dreaming” all together in the last ten years of circles for the new, full and dark moon completion. I also tested the self awakening of the emotional soul bodies practices on apprentices since 1995. This practice is very, very subtle for the subtle bodies.

moon 3Lunar Cycles
Each Moon cycle is approximately 28 Nights
(28 x 13 moons = 364 nights in a year).  In nature’s Seasonal year, there are “3 moons” for each of the four seasons (three moons of spring, three moons of summer, etc.) – with one extra moon cycle between the end of winter and the beginning of the spring equinox. As emotional beings we must contend with our karma in smaller or larger ways, that are precisely timed in their calm and intense cycles. These cycles return the burdens of our past life deeds and play out in many simple to complex ways like physical disease, mental illness, and emotional instability including illusions all the way to bipolar and schizophrenia.

The emo-soul flow gets blocked in our memories of our emotional systems until we approach and heal them from a journey into our past (this lifetime) and the woundedness which we have all suffered. That is the wounded psyche or what we shamans call, the fragmented aspects of the soul (of this lifetime). There are soul fragments also from past lives but that is much more complicated. We do what we can, and we are even under the natural age cycles and fated cycle in doing such work. Remember, the Mind-Body reality, its perimeters and jurisdictions are not the same as the Emotional-Soul reality, its perimeters and jurisdictions and perceptions.

Spiral Medicines are the core practice of Lunar or Moon Intentional Work. Its a walking backwards in time, to revisit old wounds in order to free the emotional energy of those woundings, but we need awareness in order to “get it”.  When we do not “get it” the ah ha healing moments, we become suspended and stagnant. This is the basis of permanent emotional healing which eventually leads us to our soul. We cannot heal anything we are not “aware of” in our life and along with the mental body’s meditations, the emotional lunar work is the missing half and the remaining teaching for wholeness.

At each moon’s cycle, the subtle energies of nature and our own soul (which is different than the emotional body), begins to flow or has been blocked from lifetimes of karma even at our birth. I learned how each moon cycle was very different in its effects, its energy, its thick or thinness of energy and its effected on each individual person. Around the tenth year into this monthly simple lunar path and its disciplines I saw an awakening process that was coinciding with this work, with my other spiritual path. I also shared it at my monthly goddess circle, then moon circles and lastly, my dream circles.

moonBuilding a Monthly Lunar Foundation
In the invisible aspects of our life, which are our feelings, our soul, our intuition, our dreams, our psyche, including our personal illusions and illusions in our dreams, we also build a foundation and that is working with the moon, the cycles of the (energetic) reality of that invisible.

In ancient alchemy, the Mental body and the Emotional body (and the lesser soul that we incarnate with), are called the Sacred Marriage when they are no longer at odds or in battle, and these two bodies are housed in our Physical body and bring health. The lunar life through the night’s dreaming life, and the purification of the shadow self (karma) as a process is what fragments this flow. That is simply called self sabotage, unconscious behavior, projections, neurotic behaviors or addictive behaviors and a host of other dis eases that are mental or emotional resulting in the sicknesses of the physical body.

moon 2The actual Simple Practice
Each New Moon, the first step is to set only “One New Moon Intention” … on the day of the New Moon.

The second step in two weeks after the new moon is setting: “One Full Moon Intention Release” from what appeared on your path for two weeks.

The third and last phase is the “Contemplation of the Dark Moon” period that prepares the new intention for the next New Moon.

On each New Moon, set one inner intention (about our emotional life, our creative life, our perception life or the healing of a struggle or sickness). A “Goal” is you in relationship to your greater (exterior) world, and an “Intention” is your relationship with your (inner) world. We work with intention.

When you set your New Moon, then wait for the signs and synchronicity to begin to appear (and they will). For many, this practice is first building awareness to be able see the signs and synchronicity and then eventually to weed out what isn’t important of all the signs.

When the Full Moon arrives two weeks later, we set “One Release Intention” based upon the signs and your responses to it, of what surfaced from our new moon intention. On the full moon, speak out with I RELEASE…. or I LET GO OF…. (something that no longer serves your highest good, that is about only you.)

Then during the duration of the two weeks “after” the Full Moon, this is the time of contemplation and the processes of “awareness” occurs. It is the releases in our life that brings more clarity. We bring one small awareness to us, each month.

Foundation of the following New Moon, one month after another…
The most powerful days of signs and synchronicities are the three days before the new moon, and with practice, we begin to recognize the signs that will play out the entire month. If you do any spiritual work like fasting, or meditation retreats, try to do it the week when the dark moon shifts into the new moon. The amount of information will be doubled. This all takes a lot of practice for the more advanced Lunar Practitioner, but year after year we get one more drop of awareness. A mountain moves an inch every ten years, and so too, with real awareness (consciousness) mental or emotional body.

For most beginners, its more a dedication to begin to see results. Within one year, you have set 13 actual intentions and 13 release intentions that are symbiotic. The next seasonal year, you begin a second layer of the same issues that arise, with the next 13 new moons and so forth.  This is a stabling process and practice and we cannot heal anything we are not ‘aware of’ – not mentally, but emotionally. The mind follows the emotional body but in the patriarch that has all been reversed along with philosophy to fragment core emotional truth.

Only my apprentices have practiced the ‘more complex 2nd through 8th stages of this practice’. But at my circles I have taught and still teach, just mastering the first stage is complex enough.

rock carving discovered in the vicinity of Almaty, a large city in southeastern Kazakhstan.Moon Cultures & Sobriety of the Emo & Astral Bodies
Last and certainly one of the most important aspects of the dreamer, intuitive, and emotional body and soul body is sobriety. This is our eternal body, unlike the intuition of the psychic or medium who works off the intuition of the mental astral body.

The Moon cultures were a living culture and not based on mind-body at all, but body and soul. These were the cultures of prehistory art, dreaming, shamanism, creativity, food, music, dance, sobriety (pre-Dionysus cults), which were rituals around the lunar cycles that included maidens, mothers and grandmothers. Since then, we have all lived without a real ancient awareness practice of our emotional and soul body before the 3rd century and have accrued much karma in our past lives. The purification of karmic lives require us to experience the visions of pain returned into our body, of those we had hurt in past life relationships, be that a antiquity soldier or family issues. What remained after that was the motion, but not the enlightenment aspects of the inner spiral walk that the moon cycles can lead us to, which is first and foremost, emotional rhythm as a healing practice to eventually enter emotional intelligence through nature’s consciousness.

If we drink or smoke pot, we disrupt our emotional body’s natural rhythms and flow and each decade that this has occurred its required about half that time to purify. Example, if you started smoking pot or drinking at 15 and are now 40, the rhythm of your energetic magnetic (soul cycles and emotional body cycles) have been “dried out” and no longer work with natures’s rhythm and emotional intensities. Think of the energetic astral body of our soul and emotional body as a cloud, its moist, movements, and continual flow like a large set of clouds in the sky.

These substances dry out of soul cloud body into small, millions of dried or hardened granular sand that are no longer moist nor unified. Your mind may work with your life and nature and “think” that these are intact, but when you need the power of your soul the most, we fail in not only making large changes in our life but overcoming addicts, behavioral issues etc. The Soul offers us superpower when life hits us the hardest and the “subtle” is revealed between illusions, soul blindness and emotional waves of detoxing.

This is because our magnetic energy bodies are complicated and painful when touched and they get “lost” because pot reduces and dries out the moist “cloud body” of the emotional and soul bodies. Alcohol spikes its rhythms until they are completely off balance. If one does both, it takes about 8 years of sobriety to release what was not seen in awareness of issues or loss of the past. The memory body of the emotional body is emotional energy and the remembrances is the soul body.

These magnetic energies are a great resource that many shadows have tried to steal within our astral light (of our astral, chi or unified chakra body), not only from us in waking life, but also in our dreams at night but luring us away with useless mental, university and mind cult distractions of love and light. Keeping boundaries healthy of our receptive body (soul/emo) requires that the mental body and physical body be clear and aware that the emotional body is subdued even when it shouldn’t be. And aware that the greater self (the soul) has been put into bondage even before we reincarnated.

If mother earth ignored her moon, her tides would not be consistent nor would the germination of her seeds of plants get started. So the moon is important both physically and energetically. Moon is the ancient keeper of the seasons’ natural flow, coinciding with woman’s natural emotional cycles and her bleeding cycles  – which were the original time keepers of this planet. This was replaced with the Sun calendars around the time religion came into power.

Arethusa, Spirit of the Rivers and Springs of Surákousai

Phoenix of Elder Mountain – Each new and full moon, I receive my signs and synchronicity just like you, and its how those of us, who take them much more seriously, guide a lot of our moon and dreaming path, in order to sharpen our focus and our intuitive nature as the years go buy. The second half of this Solar Eclipse (August 21, 2107) cycle, is this full moon, the more internal eclipsing and reflection to release what has surfaced. Eclipses always set off a cycle of seasons and half yearly seasons.

Water is a language of the emotional body and our many souls, regardless of how many souls are re-attained. These are the empaths, the feelers, the seers, the intuitive (not the psychic) because its the gifts of the emotional body and soul bodies, not the mental body like channelers, psychics and mediums experience. The water women are atoned to body and soul, not mind body.

Sicily SYRACUSE Onkia Nymph Arethusa & Octopus Rare Ancient Greek CoinThere are water women who range from simple to the most complex and to the highest spiritual levels of simplicity. Not everyone will go pass the half way journey because the sacrifices are too demanding in loss and isolation. The mermaid and water sprites are the simplest of all water women, they are maiden regardless of age, and more group oriented. The nymph and rusalka are much more complex and fall into the adult or mother stages as water women who nurture and bring forth life.

The celestial water spirits, like Arethusa or the Goddesses of the Oceans are the grandmother stages, and can be attained as a water journey, if both their maiden and mother years were lived, experienced self destruction, healed the self through it all and then became free and forgiving to all. The journey of a water grandmother as a water being is the most difficult of earth, air and fire, for it encompasses almost all of the earth (the water) and its fluid yet destruction for purification purposes.

I had come upon the Lydian kingdom the past two weeks, which was an ancient culture in Troy (modern day Anatolia or Turkey) and Anatolia had appeared three times since the Solar Eclipse as a synchronicity. The third is always a charm for me when something appears. Its said that the Lydians of ancient Turkey were the first to actually invent money in the form of official coins. Running across Arethusa a few days later, I felt a strong pull with her essence and I know that somehow, there is a connection to do some weaving magic in my dreams at night, my waking life and the passion of ancient wisdom.

The city of Syracuse is located on the east coast of Sicily and was originally a Greek colony founded by Corinth in 734 bce. The city enjoyed a period of expansion and prosperity under the tyrant Gelon in the 5th century BCE, survived a two year siege by Athenian forces from 415 to 413 bce, and again prospered under the tyrant Dionysus in the 4th century BCE when the city controlled much of Sicily and large portions of southern Italy. Dionysus was the first ancient Greek to figure out exactly how to destroy the prehistory circle of woman, by luring the maidens with dark sex and drug/alcohol rituals.

Once maiden became unstable, she left the eternal goddess spiritual circles of mothers and grandmothers and the elder male stepped in to teach her the new ways of serving men as women and elder women. The seeds are so corrupt at the beginning that when women try to heal today, they must go back so far into their past lives to free their soul. That takes lifetimes of healing as the water women suffered the greatest and their gifts were then under siege and used against them, call magic or the mysteries of woman’s path.

Under Dionysus rulership into the temples along with the political cult of Apollo, and his teachings spread life wild fire all over the world. We call that paganism today at its root beginnings or its foundation from the past.

Arethusa of Siracusa (asteroid #95) has been one of my synchronicity that has arrive, and there is not much written about her. I find that interesting because there are so many coins with her portrait (a symbol of value), for such a random Nereid (nymph). I looked up both where Arethusa falls in my own natal chart and where she is for all of us this full moon.

Lets begin with the rising of the tides, of that powerful water and fire within us to move deeper into what holds us back and make our personal spiritual journey more ‘personal’. That takes courage to crash against the shore over and over to find the medicine or gems we need to feel at peace, to heal our self, to speak our truth and practicing healing or letting go of relationships that are abusive to us or tear our self esteem down.

Alois Delug - Die NornenSyracuse Arethusa
Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822)

ARETHUSA arose from her couch of
snows in the Acroceraunian mountains;
From cloud and from crag with many
a jag, Shepherding her bright fountains.
She leapt down the rocks with her rainbow
locks streaming among the streams;

Her steps paved with green
the downward ravine which slopes
to the western gleams; and gliding
and springing, she went, ever singing,
In murmurs as soft as sleep.

The earth seemed to love her, and heaven
smiled above her, As she lingered towards
the deep. Then Alpheus bold, on his glacier cold
with his trident the mountains strook;
And opened a chasm In the rocks; with
the spasm, as all Erymanthus shook.
and the black south-wind.

It concealed behind the urns of the silent snow
and earthquake and thunder did rend in sunder
the bars of the springs below; The beard and
the hair of the river-god were seen through
the torrent’s sweep, As he followed the light
of the fleet nymph’s flight, to the brink of
the Dorian deep.

“O, save me! O, guide me, and bid the deep hide me,
for he grasps me now by the hair!” The loud Ocean
heard, to its blue depth stirred, and divided
at her prayer; and under the water, the Earth’s
white daughter fled like a sunny beam.

Behind her descended her billows, unblended
with the brackish Dorian stream; like a gloomy
stain on the emerald main, Alpheus rushed behind
as an eagle pursuing a dove to its ruin.
Down the streams of the cloudy wind.
Under the bowers where the ocean
powers sit on their pearled thrones.

Through the coral woods of the
weltering floods, Over heaps of
unvalued stones; through the dim beams
which amid the streams weave a network
of colored light; And under the caves,
where the shadowy waves are as green
as the forest’s night.

Outspeeding the shark, and the sword-fish dark,
under the ocean foam, and up through the
rifts of the mountain cliffs, they passed to
their Dorian home. And now from their
fountains in Enna’s mountains, down one vale
where the morning basks, like friends once parted,
grown single-hearted, they ply their watery tasks.

At sunrise they leap from their cradles steep
in the cave of the shelving hill; at noontide they
flow through the woods below and the meadows
of asphodel; And at night they sleep in the rocking
deep beneath the Ortygian shore; Like spirits that
lie In the azure sky, when they love but live no more.

“The Syracusans seemed to have a special pride in their Arethusa. After all, her fountain and pool was in their city. Unlike the great pan-Hellenic gods and goddesses (Zeus, Athena, etc.) that could be claimed by all of the Greek people, Arethusa was viewed as Syracuse’s own unique Deity and most likely was the Patron Goddess before invasions. Furthermore, Arethusa was portrayed as noble, beautiful, charming, graceful and even stunning. Perhaps these attitudes motivated the Syracusan die-engravers to create numismatic art of the highest order.”

Goddess Nymphs (spirits of the earth, air, water and fire)…

There are two Arethusas, one who was the Nymph of Syracuse, Sicily and the other, a Hesperide nymph who live in the beautiful garden, situated in the Arcadian Mountains (Greece) and at the western extreme of the Mediterranean, near Mt. Atlas. In this garden grows the trees with the golden apples of Immortality. The Hesperides are Aegle, Arethusa, Erytheia and Hesperia. They are also called The African Sisters.

The Hesperides were the most famous Greek Goddess-Nymphs of evening and the golden light of sunsets. They were the daughters of Nyx (Night) and were entrusted with the care of the tree of the golden apples, which was had been presented to the goddess Hera by Gaia or Mother Earth. They were assisted by a hundred-headed guardian, a Dragon named Ladon, who would ensure that safety of the golden apples, even if they had gotten into the hands of darkness, would take vengeance if compromised, when that time came in the future.

This is because the Hesperides were also the keepers of the balance of Heaven. The nymphs and their glowing, golden apples were regarded as the source of the golden light of the humans who had reached immortality, and the symbol of that was the golden light of sunsets – a phenomena of heaven. Because the demonic forces of the underworld also must pay for their imbalances and destruction by tearing down the earth making it hell on earth, so too does heaven tear down the great forces of evil. This happens every 25,000 year cycle at its end of time into no time or dreamtime.

The etymology of the word Syracuse seems to have derived from “Sirokos” which means the Sirocco Wind, or from “Sirakousai” which means the “Salt Water” and some scholars, however, argue that the name is in reality of Phoenician origin, signifying The “Rock of Sea-gulls”.

Areth means “Waterer” and usa means “Essence” and together, she bears the great title of the Nereid who is the “Essence of Water.” Like fire, water is the great purifier and the great renewal of life. Arethusa is the original water bearer of the dreaming cultures, long before any Greek every stepped foot on earth. In her mere mortal goddess life, she was the daughter of Nereus and the Goddess Doris and it seemed that power was part of the essence of the earlier nymphs.

According to Greek tradition, Crete was also a Nymph, who gave her name to the island. The name Crete could have probably some connection with the words krato, -ein, “reign,” and kratis, -o, “strong, powerful.” Crete’s father was said to be the Sun God Helios and the tales about her origin and about her relations had to demonstrate the glory of the island Crete, showing it as powerful.

Nymphs were associated with the Spirit  of water or land in a more celestial light. The Roman writer Ovid called Arethusa by the name “Alpheias”, because her streams are believed to have a subterranean communication with the River Alpheius, in Peloponnesus. Arethusa was a daughter of Siracusa (Syracuse), the ancient Mediterranean cultural place, which has vast archaeological sites, on the edge of their modern city today. Rare treasures of temples, amphitheaters and an ancient castles, on the Island of Ortygia which was a center of Greek, Byzantine and Judaic civilizations. Physical evidence of these three cultures can still be seen today and finds items that date back to 1500 bce. Prehistory Siracusa (Sicily) had lasted for a thousand years until Rome conquered it in 212 bce.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century, it was destroyed and taken over again by Vandals and Goths, and the Byzantine Greeks of the Eastern Roman Empire took it in 535 ce. For a few years in the middle of the seventh century, the Emperor Constans made it his capital and then the Arabs arrived in the ninth century, converting the large cathedral into a mosque, which earlier was converted from a large Greek temple to Athena.

All of these destruction’s eclipsed Syracuse in population and affluence. Arethusa as the spirit of the sacred waters, sacred springs, lakes and rivers connects her more to the indigenous tribes of those thousand years. In her beginning story, she had to flee her home in Arcadia beneath the Sea and came up as a fresh water fountain on the island of Ortygia in Syracuse, Sicily. This makes her an actual “element” spirit or goddess, like the winds of Zepher, or the Spirit of Water and Fire, not a human nymph. Needless to say, Arcadia was important to her story and why she fled. Why do women ever flee, women know why afterwards, but not during their great flight.

The Arcadians were an ancient tribe situated in the mountainous Peloponnese (what is now southern Greece and later famous because of Hercules). It was considered one of the oldest tribes which settled the area, and were proto-Greeks, mentioned by the ancient authors as Pelasgians. It is clear that the Arcadians were considered as the original inhabitants of the region and Arcadia seems to have been a cultural refuge.

When the Greek Dark Age descended (1200 bce – 800 bce), certain gods and goddess became more in demand, and as patrons of Arcadia who are: Hermes, Psychopomp, Magic and Thievery; Pan (Dionysus), Destroyer of the circle of maiden, mother and grandmother through dark sex magic, intoxication and alcohol into rituals; and Atalanta, Daughter of the King of Arcadia. Why did Arethusa leave Arcadia? Most likely war and the destruction of the old goddess.

Tetradrachm of Syracuse Arethusa, 405-400 BC-syracuse-sicily-classical-periodAfter her arrival to Syracuse, she who was the River and Springs Goddess, were given to the god Alpheus and she was demoted to NereidIn Arcadia, in her clear stream and was bathing in the form of a human, not water, not knowing the river god Alpheus was watching her, he flowed down through Elis to the sea. He fell in love with her during their encounter, but she fled after discovering  his intentions. She wished to remain independent and the attendant of Artemis who was the newly founded political goddess.

After a long chase, she prayed to her goddess to ask for protection, and Artemis hid her in a cloud, adding the element of cloud goddess of rain, moisture, storms to her story. But Alpheus was persistent, and she began to perspire from fear, and soon transformed herself into her stream form. Artemis then broke the ground allowing Arethusa another attempt to flee. Her stream traveled under the sea to the island of Ortygia, but Alpheus flowed through the sea to reach her and mingled with her waters. This short story of Arethusa says so much, not only on a goddess level, but also a shamanic culture level of the soul and its ability to shape shift. Since the Greeks chose to share nothing of woman’s powers, their gifts of the actual souls ability, small pieces of very small stories say so much.

Arethusa is on the coins of Syracuse, Sicily, which were minted between 415-400 bce, during Demeter’s search for her daughter Persephone. In symbolism, coins and money mean value or values, and combining that with her soul water element, it is the value of the soul that she had stood for before Greek conquests. For the soul is eternal, but needs the moisture of nature, love, stability and peace in order to heal or retain gifts of the soul, or to return them.

In one of her stories, Arethusa entreated Demeter to discontinue her punishment of Sicily for her daughter Persephone’s disappearance. She told the goddess that while traveling in her streams, she saw her daughter looking weak and sick as the queen of Hades. Arethusa’s most popular version of the legend as daughter of Nereus and Doris who passed her time in the retinue of Artemis the Romans’ Diana, Huntress and Goddess of the woods.

Herself a huntress, Arethusa vowed never to marry and be a priestess of Artemis. But these were newer stories, as the long-lived, beautiful nymphs maidens were usually associated with natural locations, such as streams, mountains or forests. But not the stream itself. Arethusa was a river nymph and her myth originates geographically with the River Alpheius in the city state of Elis in the northwestern region of Peloponnese.

Syracuse Arethusa-classical-periodCertain parts of this river, which empties into the Ionian Sea, passes underground. The message of the story, if one can be said to exist, involves more than lust, love or desire. It seems to say something about some woman’s need to be free and escaping judgment and repression emotionally.

The Arethusan Spring on Ortygia was a sacred place to the cult of Artemis. The Greek flowers that grew there were said to come directly from Greece, and it was said that a cup tossed into the Greek river would emerge in Arethusa’s Syracusan spring, which today is a freshwater pool. The classical names Aretha and Areta are based on the name of this eternal nymph, the ancient Sicilians’ protectresses of Syracuse. It has been suggested that the Arethusa’s underground spring feeds the mikvah of Syracuse in Ortygia’s Jewish Quarter.

For eight centuries the legend of Arethusa survived as part of the fabric of Syracusan life, just as Persephone’s cult endured at Enna in central Sicily. Their stories bear a striking similarity which may not be entirely coincidental. The cult of Arethusa remained strong throughout the Roman rule of Syracuse.

The statue of Arethusa laying at the feet of Artemis…

Syracuse Arethusa-classical-period

The coinage of Syracuse began around 515 BC and, unlike the coinage of other city-states, tetradrachms were among the first coins minted. The availability of silver to the Syracusan coiners was the most likely reason for the prompt development of this large denomination.

The silver coinage of Syracuse is interesting in terms of both its artistry and diversity. Arethusa was the water nymph associated with Syracuse. She was pursued by the river god Alpheos from Peloponnese to the small island of Ortegia, which is a part of Syracuse. When she re-emerged in the freshwater spring at Syracuse, she became the patron of this city-state which was dependent upon the water that surrounded it.

arethusa - hair dolphins coinOver the next several decades, her head was enlarged to take up most of the coin while the four corners of the squares metamorphosed into four dolphins, re-affirming Arethusa’s status as a water-nymph. By the fifth century, the artists of Syracuse were experimenting with a multitude of different styles and images for the water nymph. Through varied hairstyles and different types of ornamentation, the artists achieved the greatest elaboration when they signed their work.

A usage of simple design and low relief mark the first issues of the fifth century. Arethusa has an archaic eye, a fleshy nose, parted and slightly upturned lips, as well as simply-punched hair that invites comparison to the immensely popular Athenian trade coins of the same time. Several years later, the artists developed a more naturalistic Arethusa with more realistic hair formed by lines rather than punched dots, a beaded diadem or laurel wreath instead of the modest linear diadem, and eye features that fill the voids prevalent in the earlier issues.
